Clay is what the pros play with. When you walk into the bellagio and your name gets called for the big game, you’ll buy a couple racks of $1,000 yellow chips. These will be the real deal: Paulson real clay poker chips. They feel great, have just the right heft, and when you get enough poker players all fondling and fiddling with them at once, provide the glorious hum of a busy poker room. Take a look:

However, on your quest for the perfect set of chips, you’ve undoubtedly come across set of chips whose peddlers claim that you are getting “clay” chips. Do a search on Ebay for “clay poker chips” and you’ll undoubtably come across a mass of listings for these poker chips. How this unscrupulous trend started, I do not know, but these are not clay chips! Here’s why:
- These chips contain a metal slug in the middle for weight. This causes a metallic sound resembling the sound of a bag of nickels not poker chips.
- The chips look and feel like (and mostly are made of) plastic. They are down right slippery - A stack will topple with the slightest nudge.
- Just look at them! Poker chips should be a thing of beauty! (It’s not like you find much beauty elsewhere in a poker room.)
Ok, I suppose I am being a bit of a poker chip snob. There are prettier options than the chips I linked above for those of us on a budget. (Like me…)
