Before there were ProGens, there were NexGens - Another quality substitute for buying actual clay poker chips. These chips do contain a metal insert, but that fact does not make them another cheap ripoff by any means. In fact, the sound of these chips is not metallic at all and sounds very similar to the real thing.
The texture of NexGens is also very similar to real clay. Coming from a clay composite, the feel is a bit chalky at first, but after some use, they will play perfectly. They will fall beautifully when you toss 10 of them into the pot. They’ll also shuffle easily, if you’re into that sort of thing.

These are the chips I purchased when I was a poor college kid, they’ve held up nicely and I still use them in my home game today. Admittedly, it hasn’t been that long. That said, I would highly recommend these chips along with ProGens to anyone on a budget.
